- Praying For Our Brother

  Words. That is the title of one of my favorite songs by Hawk Nelson. It can be found on their sixth studio album, “Made” and the first one to feature Jonathan “Jon” Steingard as the frontman.
  
  Jon Steingard made the news this week for more than just the amazing worship music he, and Hawk Nelson, create in their Christian band.
  
  He made a public declaration that he no longer believes in God.
  
  My heart was devastated when I heard this and I immediately began praying for him. He needs the most love, prayers, and support that we can give him.
  
  So much is being said about this right now on several news stations, but I was incredibly inspired by the words shared on Facebook by his brothers/fellow band members:
  
  “One of our best friends, one with whom we have walked, worked and lived alongside for 20+ years revealed some of his innermost feelings on his faith journey this past week. Our mission as Hawk Nelson has always been to inspire and encourage all people with the truth that God is FOR them and not against them. In that message’s most simple and purest form, that THEY matter. So now we turn that truth towards one of our own. That God is still FOR Jon & he still matters. Why? Because that truth doesn’t change just because we question it.”
  
  How we treat one another when they are at a different stage in their journey based on their life experiences is part of a bigger conversation. We are called to love one another unconditionally, as God loves us. We should also encourage and challenge one another in our Faith, seeking the truth” (newreleasetoday editorial).
  
  No judgment in those words, just pure, unconditional love and support when their (our) brother, Jon, needs it the most.
  
  More than anything, we need to be praying for him and his family. Apostle Paul, in 1 Timothy 2:1 reminds us about praying for others:
  
  “I urge, then, first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—”
  
  Please join me in praying for him, and all the other people that the Lord may be bringing to your mind to pray and intercede for. I believe it is not only a responsibility to pray for others, but it is a gift as well. The love and prayer we have and share with others can affect them for eternity!! Amen!! So, keep praying, seeking, loving, and believing because God is ALWAYS at work!!
  
  On a personal note, several songs by Hawk Nelson have truly inspired me. I mentioned Words earlier, but I also love He Still Does (Miracles). If you have not listened to it before or it has been a while check it out. Those are the words we need to inspire us right now. God is ALWAYS at work and miracles are all around us and happening all the time!!
  
  Something to keep in mind as you continue to listen to their music. The message through their lyrics and their voices is from God, make no mistake where it came from. God gives the message, man is the vessel through which it is given. Keep listening to the worship music and let God minister to you through their gift and Him.
  
  Remember….

  This morning, after I read my devotional, I was reflecting on what my biggest takeaway was from the bible study we just wrapped up during my Wednesday night ladies’ small group at church.
  
  Our study, “Trustworthy: A Study of 1 & 2 Kings” by Lysa Terkeurst definitely provided me with a deeper understanding of several of the Kings I’ve read about in these books of the Bible. However, I was looking for that A-ha God moment, you know the one where God personally ties up the season you are walking through RIGHT NOW with His Word and clear direction?!
  
  I realized the most important thing that was missing: I hadn’t asked for the Holy Spirit’s Guidance. “You do not have, because you do not ask.” James 4:2b
  
  So, during my morning prayers, I asked God to reveal, through the Holy Spirit, what He would have me learn and take away from this Bible Study, to help me move forward in the season He has me walking through right now.
  
  He didn’t disappoint. He never does when I ask for wisdom and guidance through His Word and Instruction. Now, it may not come in MY timing, but it ALWAYS comes.
  
  The first words of Wisdom were discovered on page 36:
  
  “His ways? They aren’t our ways. And that’s actually something we should be thankful for, even when He asks us to do things that don’t make sense to us” (Terkeurst, Lysa).
  
  Now, that spoke to me. But the part that REALLY got my attention was the back story to the quote I just mentioned.
  
  This chapter focuses on King Solomon, and how God wanted him to rebuild his temple. However, there was somebody else who really wanted to honor God with this monumental task: Solomon’s father, King David.
  
  We’ll pick this part up, back in the study, on page 36:
  
  “For all of King David’s tremendous achievements and accomplishments, the one thing he was not able to accomplish was the construction of the temple. God didn’t allow David to build the temple because David was a man of war and bloodshed (1 Chron. 22:8, 28:3). Building the temple was David’s request (2 Sam. 7:2), a request God denied” (Terkeurst, Lysa).
  
  In my mind, I can see King David trying to reason with God. “God, I’ve fought all of these battles in obedience to You, and now, I’m asking You to give me my heart’s desire. Let me build Your temple. Yet, God denied it.
  
  Ouch. It hurts when God denies the very things that bring us joy in relation to Him. Here is what Lysa Terkeurst says about that on page 37:
  
  “David’s desire to build the temple was a good thing, which can make it feel like a good idea. But not all good ideas are God ideas. When we find ourselves in similar situations, we have yet another opportunity to make the choice to trust God (Terkeurst, Lysa).
  
  Over the last couple of months, I have seen the progression of a new season in my life. Incredibly different than any I have been in before. I have been experiencing debilitating migraines that are atypical and sometimes require me to convalesce for days and weeks at a time.
  
  Based on my symptoms, I believe I am suffering from vestibular migraines, which affect the nervous system. In addition to the migraine, I have extreme dizziness, vertigo, and balance issues that make it difficult to read, write, drive, etc. My last episode lasted two weeks. In April, I have an MRI and Neurological appointment set up to help figure out all of the details behind these migraines.
  
  As a result of these health changes, I have been struggling with despair and questioning whether or not I am still on the path that God had whispered to my heart many years ago.
  
  But, what I do know is this: I need to trust God right where I’m at. He knows all that I am going through, after all, He allowed it, so if I keep putting Him first, and I’m obedient to all He calls me to do, I need to rest in where I am and learn to find Joy in this season.
  
  So, right now I’m not writing nearly as much as I would like. However, God really has me focusing on relationships. Several people that I haven’t spoken to in quite a while, I’m getting reacquainted with.
  
  Also, I take my dad to all of his medical appointments and they have needed to increase lately. I really enjoy these times with my dad; we are making memories. Isn’t that one of the most important things? Memories, relationships–all brought together by Our Lord, the One that Knows all.
  
  One other quick thing: did you know Our God has a sense of humor? While I was beginning to write this a new personal mantra popped into my head:
  
  “Girl, stay in your lane!!”
  
  What?! I had to laugh when I thought that. I love it!!
  
  I’ve realized, especially lately as I have been discouraged, that I keep comparing myself to the “races” that others are running in the lanes next to me.
  
  “Wow, she’s got it all together and she has three kids under the age of ten?” “What’s wrong with me that I can’t….”
  
  I can’t…because that is not my lane. God is working with me, in my lane, and looking to my left and my right will NEVER equip me to run the race that God can only equip me for.
  
  I need to only look up to Him and ahead.
  
  Not behind me, or to the lane on my left or right. I need to stay in my lane and finish the race God has set before me. After all, He is the only One who knows my talents, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, desires, and heart, and He is the only One who can work all of those details out for His perfect plan for my life. And yours.
  
  “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
  
  I encourage you to stay in your lane. Let God be the only One to lead your life, through whatever season you are in. May God bless you!

  This week, while I was reflecting, being still in the presence of God, and praying I was thinking a lot of Billy Graham and some of the amazing words of wisdom he had given while he was here on earth. I reacquainted myself with some of my favorites and wanted to share them with you. Lord bless!!

  Hello everyone!! Happy Wednesday, one of my favorite days of the week! My daughter and I get to wake up just a little bit later in the morning because it’s a late start for school and that makes the morning even better. Yay!! Did I ever mention that in the Crenshaw household, we love our sleep and are more night owls than early birds… 🙂
  
  Anyway. Today when I was preparing to write, I came across some quotes on “hope” and I could not stop reading them–and before I knew it I had spent the better part of a half-hour reading them. I guess hope is contagious after all. I wanted to share a few that I discovered with you! Enjoy!!
  
  “Hope itself is like a star–not to be seen in the sunshine of prosperity, and only to be discovered in the night of adversity.”

  Of those, I believe my favorite quote is the one by Charles Haddon Spurgeon. It is so true that when life is going well and on track we don’t think too much about needing hope. Throw a crisis into the mix and despair/hope are teetering together on a balance, weighing heavily on the shoulders of the one facing adversity. But, like Spurgeon says, this is when the star of hope has the brightest chance to shine!!
  
  Another favorite, sorry, had to share:
  
  And, like Alain de Botton says, the difference lies in how you are telling (or viewing) the same facts of the story: are using the lens of hope or the lens of despair? The choice, as hard as I know it can be, is ours to make.

- Testimonies of Hope: Morning Glory!

  Good morning everyone! Happy Friday!! I’m heading out camping this weekend with my family one last time before the rain and colder temperatures set in during the fall and winter months. We are going to the same campground as pictured above. I love getting outdoors and resting in the peace and serenity of God’s Creation–so restorative and beautiful.
  
  ***
  
  Have you ever considered the thought that all the work God is doing through you and in you is not just for today, but for eternity?
  
  In all honesty, these two testimonial quotes really broadened my thoughts, perspective, and hope in light of all God is allowing me to go through here in relation to my spending eternity there with Him in Heaven. Take a look:
  
  Dr. Billy Graham writes, “I have a friend who lost his job, a fortune, his wife, and his home. But he tenaciously held to his faith–the only thing he had left. One day he stopped to watch some men doing stonework on a huge church. One of them was chiseling a triangular piece of stone.
  
  “What are you going to do with that?” asked my friend. The workman said, “See that little opening way up there near the spire? Well, I’m shaping this down here so it will fit up there.”
  
  Tears filled my friend’s eyes as he walked away, for it seemed that God had spoken through the workman to explain the whole ordeal through which he was passing, “I’m shaping you down here so you’ll fit in up there.”
  
  After you have “suffered a while, make you perfect…settle you,” echo the words of the Bible (Graham, Dr. Billy 154-155).
  
  While I was reading that testimony, it opened up my heart and mind to ALL God is doing not only in my life but to those around me as well. I’ve got to admit oftentimes I think only of what God is doing through me today, and how, through Him, I can make a difference in this world. I never gave much thought to the fact that He is shaping me down here to fit in in Heaven!! Amazing!
  
  Consider, also, this quote that Victor Hugo said of death:
  
  “When I go down to the grave I can say, like so many others: I have finished my work, but I cannot say I have finished my life. My day’s work will begin the next morning. My tomb is not a blind alley. It is a thoroughfare. It closes in the twilight to be open in the dawn” (Graham, Dr. Billy 104).
  
  I find so much hope in these testimonies. They assure me that, because I have salvation through Jesus Christ, all that I am going through has a purpose, even though I may not know it here on earth.
  
  Joy is coming and nothing is wasted!! Can you imagine it?! What will YOUR first morning be like with Jesus?
  
  Running and skipping around pain-free? Hugging loved ones you haven’t met yet or seen in a very long time? Finally, shaking loose from the bondage of addiction? Eating foods/meals that disease has prevented you from having? Yes, I imagine good food/meals in Heaven, after all, Jesus ate a piece of fish with some of His disciples after His resurrection (Luke 24: 40-43), right?? 🙂
  
  Oh, the Glory to be revealed that day!! Until then, keep using me, Father, for Your Glory!!

- Testimony of Hope: ‘The Solid Rock’

  Edward Mote was raised in the early 1800’s in London, by his pub-owning parents. Often neglected and left to his own devices, his Sundays were spent playing on the streets of this bustling city. “So ignorant was I that I did not know there was a God” (Terry, Lindsey).
  
  The years went by and young Edward became a carpenter’s apprentice, honing and practicing the skills necessary to eventually open his own cabinetmaking shop in Southwark, a suburb of London.
  
  During these same years, he began attending Tottenham Court Road Chapel where he heard a sermon by Minister John Hyatt. “He soon learned by Hyatt’s sermons that Jesus Christ could take away all the fears of life and give him the peace of heart and mind that he had long desired” (Terry, Lindsey). He was baptized at the age of eighteen, and became a devoted churchman, seeking God and desiring that one day he may be a pastor of his own church.
  
  ***
  
  We are leading up to my favorite part of his testimony: how God can take any moment–even that of a mundane walk to work– and transform it into a life-changing, all for God’s glory moment!!!
  
  Let’s continue…
  
  While walking to work one day, Edward began to think about writing a hymn. Even before he had reached his cabinet shop, he had the chorus (and I’m almost positive you’ve heard it before):
  
  “On Christ the solid rock I stand;
  
  All other ground is sinking sand.”
  
  By the end of his work day, he had four stanzas completed.
  
  “My hope is built on nothing less
  
  Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
  
  I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
  
  But wholly lean on Jesus name.”
  
  The hymn that we recognize now as, “The Solid Rock,” was Mote’s lyrics set to music composed by William B. Bradley in 1837.
  
  Mote continued his carpentry work for quite a few years and was quite successful at it, so much so, that his material success at this job, was used in a such way by God, to allow one of his earlier dreams to come true.
  
  “Yet the real dream of this devoted disciple was to become a pastor of a church. Because of his financial means, he took on the project of providing primary funding…of a nice church building in the village of Horsham, Sussex, England for the Baptists there” (Maxey, Al).
  
  Upon the completion of this church, the congregation wanted the deed of the building to go to Edward Mote. He would have nothing to do with that. His desire was to the pulpit and preach. “I do not want the chapel; I only want the pulpit, and when I cease to preach Christ, then turn me out of that” (Maxey, Al).
  
  For over twenty-one years, Pastor Mote preached at the Baptist church in Sussex, England, never missing one Sunday, and never was he “turned out of the pulpit.” He faithfully preached the Good News of Jesus Christ every chance he could.
  
  Due to ill health, he retired from the pastorate at the age of 77 and passed away a year later. He is buried in the churchyard of this beloved church where God gave him the desire of his heart– to preach.

  Are you hoping and believing that God can turn an “ordinary moment” in your day into a life-changing, all for God’s glory moment?! I am!!
  
  Because God can use an ordinary person, like me (and you), for His Glory!! The Bible is full of examples and that’s why I love testimonies’ like this!!! Amen?!
  
  To do that, just like Pastor Mote did, surrender your life and heart to Jesus Christ, seek Him daily through prayer and His Word, and live each day Trusting His Guidance and Provision and Promises.
  
  Who knows, maybe one day your testimony will change in this way:
  
  “While driving in my car on the way to work, suddenly, I had the desire from God to….”

  Good morning!! It’s going to be a great day! 🙂
  
  Yesterday, while my coffee was brewing, I was opening up the mail and came across a pretty big envelope from the American Lung Association. It was filled with Christmas cards, notepads, and gift tags that immediately filled my heart with hope.
  
  Hope because of Jesus, and His significance for the season, but also the hope that one day a cure will be discovered for all people afflicted with lung disease and lung cancers.
  
  You see, it wasn’t a big surprise that I received mail from the American Lung Association. I have donated several times in memory of my mom, Sue, who died way too young from lung cancer. My hope and prayer is that one day no one will struggle to breathe or hear the dreaded news that their cancer is terminal.
  
  While looking through and reading the cards, one quote and the beautiful image on it really spoke to my heart:
  
  So today, I continue to hope. Hope for a cure for these dreaded diseases, and know that I can place all my trust and hope in God:

  HOPE. I don’t know about you, but I could use a healthy dose of it right now. Everywhere I turn the headlines and words I hear can be so discouraging.
  
  That’s why I am so thankful that not only does God hear the cries of my heart, but He has answered them in multiple ways!!
  
  First, and ultimately, through my Savior Jesus Christ. He alone is THE source of my HOPE!!
  
  Second, He answered my prayers by revealing the HOPE of Jesus through His Word, the sermons at my church recently, and through encouraging songs.
  
  Finally, Thank you God for giving me the desire deep in my heart to seek You first, and to share encouragement, hope, and love through You, and the community of people you invite around me. 🙂

  Jesus is THE ultimate source of hope! And we, as a community of believers (the church), are called to not only share the Gospel but to spread the Hope of Jesus!
  
  My church, SFC, last week began a series titled, Empowered to Hope. It is such a blessing and so timely to what my heart and soul needed at this season of my life.
  
  I am thankful that God knows what I need even before I do, and that this message was put in place by Him, and delivered through my faithful, God-fearing Pastor, just when that seed of discouragement was beginning to take root in my spirit. Not anymore, though.
  
  While listening to this teaching, I was reminded of who I want to be in Christ. An encourager. Someone that puts God first, and follows through with the will that He placed in my life and heart.
  
  Years ago, when God planted the seed of writing in my heart, He was in the process of showing me, through the Holy Spirit, that He was ALWAYS there and He was ALWAYS at work.
  
  Even through the deepest darkest pits of grief, despair, and discouragement, He was the flickering light of Hope, showing me the Way to Him. Oftentimes, it was the community of believers–the church–that spoke His Word, shared His love, and welcomed me into their arms while I cried and sought God.
  
  That is who I want to strive to be every day. An encourager of Jesus, one that shares the hope of what Jesus is doing and changing in my life– ready to share everything God places in my heart to do and be!!
  
  Our Pastor, Mr. Mike Price, shared this in his message, Empowered to Hope: Week 2:
  
  “If we are going to make a difference in the world it is going to come through hope filled people. Hope filled people change the world…we can point to what Jesus has already done in us.”
  
  That is who I want to be and I need your help. Please join me in being an encouragement to the community of people God invites us to share our lives with, to share the message of the Gospel with, and to share the Hope and Love of Jesus.
  
  So I’m dedicating every Wednesday of this blog to sharing the hope and encouragement of Jesus.
  
  How do we (I) do that?!
  
  By sharing something from your day or week that Jesus has done, that encouraged you so strongly, that you can’t help but share it!
  
  I’ll begin. Jesus used my Pastor’s message last Sunday and this song, “Hope Can Change Everything” by Bart Millard and other artists, to move my discouragement to encouragement this week!! Amen!! God is so good and faithful!!
  
  Here’s a snippet of the words:

  Jesus–THE HOPE–that can change everything. What is He changing for you and in you?

- Satan’s Favorite Word: Tomorrow

  Hi everyone!!
  
  I love this picture: it reminds me a little of how I felt on Saturday–a little sideways. Let me explain.
  
  I began writing this message on Saturday, to get ahead of my schedule of posting on Monday-Wednesday-Friday. To say I’m computer-challenged is just half of it and through many errors, I accidentally posted on Saturday. Or did I ?!
  
  So, instead of thinking I blundered, I chose to believe God wanted someone to read it on Saturday. 🙂
  
  I updated the title and I am resubmitting it today. Thank you, God, for today! What a blessing!!

  Hello everyone! What a beautiful day. Our weather here in the PNW has had the undertones of Fall–which I love, it’s my favorite season– but it reminds me just how fast time goes!
  
  Summer went by so quick, I don’t think my kids had one chance to say they were bored on the long, lazy days of summer!
  
  All of those thoughts on time got me thinking of right now. Today.
  
  “What am I filling this day with and Who is leading it?”
  
  Last week, while visiting a friend, she shared a book with me by Dr. David Jeremiah, “Slaying the Giants in Your Life.” While flipping through the book I landed on some words of Truth that I really needed to hear. Life-changing, heartfelt, and God-given words.
  
  “Years ago, a very famous preacher surveyed the Bible to find out what were the most important words in the scripture. For instance, he wanted to find out what was the saddest word in the Bible, and what was the happiest word. But when he came to the most dangerous word in the Bible, the word that he chose was the word “tomorrow”” (Jeremiah, Dr. David, emphasis mine).
  
  Think about it. Procrastination leads people to put off fighting addictions. Or making that doctor’s appointment that can prevent a disease or bring about the right treatment plan. It has altered the dreams of students and their educational steps to fulfillment of degrees and higher learning. Also, may have kept many people stuck in the rut of a dead-end job, never taking a chance on what a different opportunity may bring.
  
  Most importantly, “it has kept more men and women from coming to Christ than any other word in the dictionary. Let me tell you today that Satan’s favorite word of all words is “tomorrow,” but the word that is dear to the heart of God is “today” (Jeremiah, Dr. David, emphasis mine).
  
  Today.
  
  Again, the question comes to mind, “What am I filling today with, and Who is leading it?”
  
  The reason I believe those words of Truth put such a deep check in my heart is that I was putting off my writing until tomorrow and allowing Satan to steal and destroy what God is trying to do today–through my writing and through my life. Not anymore, No way!
  
  So here I am TODAY. Leaning on and Trusting in the promises of God. He is leading me on this path of ministering through writing. The Lord began this journey in me years ago, and the Holy Spirit is leading me into this new adventure. This is one scripture that really inspires me:
  
  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28
  
  So today I decide to live intentionally pursuing God first (through His Word, prayer, and worship) so that my eyes, ears, and heart are open to any divine appointments God brings my way. A word of encouragement to a friend or stranger. Calling someone who needs to hear that Jesus loves them. A hug that speaks a thousand words without a single word being spoken. Speaking the Good News of Salvation today to someone God knows doesn’t have tomorrow….
  
  I do not want to miss any opportunity God brings my way, today, because “…your life is like a morning fog–it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” (James 4:14 NLT)
  
  Today is God’s day and can be filled with His divine appointments for you, so:
  
  What are YOU filling this day with and Who is leading it?
