    • A Widow’s Call

Posted at 7:07 PM by Shanon Crenshaw, on February 9, 2019
      Cool Paul

      My dad, Paul early 70’s

Last week I spoke about my mom and celebrated her, on what would have been her 68th birthday. Today, I would like to share some thoughts on an incredible blessing God gifted to me and my sisters, our dad, Paul.

When I woke up last Saturday morning, February 2nd–my dad’s birthday–the Lord placed a scripture on my heart concerning my dad and over the course of the week revealed to me, through the Holy Spirit, my dad’s faithfulness to Him and showed me his legacy.

      honour widows

It is easy, through the lens of time, to look back and see how God has a plan for our life, knows our hearts completely, and uses us in ways that can bring triumph out of tragedy.

In fact, God may start a ministry in your life, in such a subtle way when you are young, that it is only revealed, upon reflection and with the help of the Holy Spirit, when your hair is a little grayer and smile lines have deepened. Such is the story of my dad.

      ***

Back in the mid to late 1960s, when my dad was in California and right out of the Air Force, he and his cousin Jack hung out a lot, they even went out on double dates together. Jack and his high school girlfriend, Sue Thorne, my dad, and his date went to the movies and restaurants together frequently. Deep friendships were formed.

What God was working behind the scenes of these lives links them all together for eternity with God at the center–my dad was beginning a life that he would have never imagined for himself, but God did. A life of selflessness and compassion, a ministry of helping family through their hardest times: as widows.

In late 1969, Jack got the call to go to the Vietnam War. He was newly married and his wife, Sue, was pregnant. My dad, at 26, was already out of the Air Force and was a civilian. Because Jack and my dad were so close, he asked my dad, should anything happen to him, to step in and help Sue out if she needed it.

Sadly, Jack was killed in the Vietnam War at 19 years old with a six-week-old baby at home, my sister Melanie. My dad stepped in right away because my mom didn’t have parents to help, her in-laws were not very nice to her, and other family members had young kids themselves and couldn’t help as much as they would have liked.

My dad brought diapers, soothed her when she was crying, and just helped out in any way he could like Jack asked him to. Over time, they fell in love and got married. Three daughters blessed this couple, and there were no dividing lines of love. All were loved and cared for equally.

My parents, Paul and Sue, were married around 19 years before my mom passed away from cancer. My dad has never remarried. My mom was the love of his life. I believe, that if God had remarriage in His plans for my dad, he would have been open to it. But God had other plans…

A few years after my mom died, my grandpa had a stroke. The stroke left him paralyzed on his left side, unable to walk, and he also couldn’t talk anymore. Being a widow himself, he didn’t have someone to live with him. This is where God used my dad.

My dad moved from California to Indiana, moved into the farmhouse, and took care of him. He worked a local job at night and took care of him during the day. I don’t remember him complaining to me–not that what he was going through wasn’t difficult–but he grew up with the mindset that you do what needs to get done. Period. He cared for my grandpa as long as he could in the farmhouse he loved so dearly.

A few years went by, and during that time he lived with my husband and me for a short while, getting to know his grandkids, making memories, and helping us out. He also lived with my sister, helping her out in the same way–as dad and grandpa! 🙂

God soon had another plan for my dad to help out a widow–his Uncle Pete. As a recent widow, Uncle Pete needed someone to live near him on his property, spend time with him, and keep him from overtaxing himself. He was known to do too much in relation to his capabilities. His mind made plans his aging body couldn’t keep up with. This is where my dad partnered alongside him and helped him complete the tasks he wanted to do around his house and property.

My dad had a long history with Uncle Pete. Whenever my dad was on leave from the Air Force, it was Uncle Pete who always stepped in to pick him up and bring him home. My dad never forgot how he helped him and now he was at a place to help him out. It was never a burden to him, he loved and respected his Uncle. He stayed and helped out until Uncle Pete’s care required more than one person.

      ***

Decades ago, when my dad was beginning his life, I’m sure he never envisioned a life of moving around so much. He may have thought he would have lived in one neighborhood raising his family. God had a different plan. He used the tragedies in his life as a way of helping others and bringing Christ-like love and compassion to their time of need.

To those on the outside, my dad’s life may appear as though he moved from house to house and didn’t place his roots down in one house and job like many people do.

In reality, what my dad chose to do, is place his roots in Christ first, and follow the directed steps of His savior.

      god directs his steps

My dad is a faithful and remarkable man. I love him deeply for many reasons, but what stands out the most is what a selfless and compassionate man of Christ he is.

Happy 75th birthday, pop!!! You mean the world to me!!!

      All the glory to God,

      Shanon

    • Is Today the Day?

Posted at 5:30 PM by Shanon Crenshaw, on January 18, 2019

      homecoming

      Going Home…

Have you thought about it? God has. In fact, because He is omniscient, He has all of your days and my days recorded in His book, before even one came to pass. “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day passed” (Psalm 139:16 NIV).

The Bible teaches that God knows the exact moment when each man is to die (Job 14:5).

This week I have found myself more focused on these Truths of God than ever before. You see, I have heard of several unexpected deaths this week of people I know and it brought the subject of death to the forefront of my mind.

God is awesome and His timing is perfect. Yesterday, January 17th, when my heart was heavy with prayer, love, and concern for my friends, God spoke to me through scripture and the amazing gift of fellow believer Billy Graham.

“How different would today be if you knew it would be your last one on earth before meeting God face to face? We should strive to live everyday as if it were our last, for one day it will be” (Graham, Billy. emphasis mine).

      ***

Honestly, God has been hard at work changing me from the inside out over the last several years. I am ready for Him to call me Home, even if it is today. Years ago, I would have been concerned about leaving my kids, husband, and family behind. How would they be without me? What if, missing me, caused them to have problems with their faith and their relationship with God?

God reassured me that, He was always with me when I walked through that very situation at eighteen years old, and that He would be there in the same way for my family as well. In fact, He loves them more than I ever could. He is a good, good Father. My fears have been replaced by His promises.

So, I live every day seeking God first. I shower all the people God places in my life with love, prayer, and my time. I place importance on experiences and people rather than on material things.

Please understand I am not trying to be boastful or proud. This is all the work of God, He changed me. I am eternally thankful that He did.

What about you? How would you answer Billy Graham’s question? Are you living today knowing that when you die you will meet Jesus face to face?! Does your family and friends around you know about Jesus and the Good News He brings to the whole world?

      billy grahams sinners prayer

Don’t tarry…for the day is coming. Ask Jesus into your heart to be your Savior. Seek God every day. Pray and love without ceasing.

“Our Father and our God, when my time on earth is finished, please draw me safely into Your heavenly home. I pray that You will take me into Your presence when You are ready for me to go. Help me to be ready for that time. If my work on earth is not yet finished, then please give me the spiritual strength to continue. In Jesus’ name. Amen” (Graham, Billy).

That prayer was at the end of the devotional for that day, January 17th, and it said beautifully what my heart could not put into words. I love the God-given wisdom of Billy Graham.

If you have not begun a devotional for 2019, I highly recommend, “Unto the Hills. A Daily Devotional.” by Billy Graham. I was blessed enough to find it for $2.99 at my local thrift store. This girl loves a bargain. 🙂 Check it out!!

May God bless you today and always!

      momma duck with babies

Good afternoon!! I hope everyone is doing well today! God is so good and this picture of baby ducks reminded me of His awesome protection!

I love animals, especially baby animals. I ran across this picture in a magazine and HAD to save it! It was taken in Forest Farm Park, Cardiff Wales, England. This precious mommy duck was protecting her five babies from the rain. Don’t you just love the intricate pattern she used to snuggle all five under the protection of her wings? Precious!

“Ok, Tommy you’re first. Get close to Mommy’s wing. Settle in. Jordan, your next. Turn around. Get close to your brother…” “Awww, mom. I never get to face front….” 🙂

Anyway–this picture brought to my mind one of my favorite scriptures from Colossians, and I may have shared it with you before.

Colossians 3:3 (NIV) “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”

WOW, isn’t that amazing?! As a believer, your life is “hidden with Christ.” Hidden means concealed and safe. Protected. Loved. Secure. This is not only a future hope, but an accomplished fact right now.

Our service and conduct do not earn our salvation, but they are the results of our salvation. Take heart that your salvation is secure, and live each day for Christ. (Colossians 3:3 commentary, NIV).

I don’t know about you, but every day I witness a battle going on all around me–extreme negativity, greed, false witness, lies, etc. The enemy is all around trying to seek, kill, and destroy us.

Daily, I need the security of our Almighty God, and I believe His “wings” of protection will cover every aspect of my life. However, I need to be an active participant in the battle.

God expects us to, “be strong in the LORD and in His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” Ephesians 6: 10-18. The Armor of God is the Helmet of Salvation, the Shield of Faith, the Breastplate of Righteousness, the Belt of Truth, the Sword of the Spirit, and the Gospel of Peace.

Put on the Armor of God

One thing to keep in mind, this needs to be a daily practice. Imagine, if you would, a soldier who goes off to fight in a war that he never prepared for.

      — He never uses a weapon.

—He never strategizes with his commanding officer or fellow comrades.

—He never gets physically fit to withstand the rigors of war.

—He never gets fitted properly for his helmet, boots, clothing, and other gear, which results in poor fit and wear.

      ***

How would it go? Not well, for sure! His day of reckoning with the enemy would not be as successful as if he had prepared daily to fight the battle.

Preparation builds confidence, assurance, and strength. When we use the Armor of God daily, we are committing all the scripture, prayer, strength, peace, truth, and righteousness to our mind, body, and soul. I believe that it becomes a visceral part of us, through our Holy Spirit.

Then, I believe the Holy Spirit within us, helps draw out the right scripture, prayer, strength, measure of peace, etc. that is needed at any particular time. Does that make sense?

For example, you are going through a difficult trial, and one day, a scripture comes to your mind on strength, courage, or whatever the Holy Spirit knows will help you.

Those words speak life and power in such a magnified way that it is as though God is wrapping you in His arms and covering you with His mighty protection.

It comes down to this, we need to fill our mind, body, and soul with the Word of God, Shield of Faith, Peace, Trust, Helmet of Salvation, and Righteousness daily. You will see Jesus every single time you do each one of those things.

Oswald Chambers, in his devotional dated December 24th, has a magnificent way of explaining this:

“When you really see Jesus, I defy you to doubt Him. If you see Him when He says, “Let not your heart be troubled…” (John 14:27), I defy you to worry. It is virtually impossible to doubt when He is there. Every time you are in personal contact with Jesus, His words are real to you. “My peace I give to you…” (John 14:27)– a peace which brings an unconstrained confidence and covers you completely, from the top of your head to the soles of your feet. “…your life is hidden with Christ in God,” and the peace of Jesus Christ that cannot be disturbed has been imparted to you.”

Amen!! Do you feel the power in those words?! I urge you to begin today and prepare for the battle all around you, “Be strong in the Lord and His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-11 NIV.

Amen! All the glory to God!!

      grace of God has appeared

Good morning!! I’ve got to admit, I love the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season! Decorating the Christmas tree, all the holiday baking, and gathering together with family and friends to break bread and create memories.

One thing I’ve discovered is that the light of Jesus in my heart needs to shine even brighter during the season of His birth!

Many of my family and friends, whom I may not see any other time of year, get a glimpse of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world through me, that they may not otherwise witness.

The same is true of you my friends, your homes may be filled with saved and unsaved hearts. Our churches will be filled with people of all backgrounds, faiths, hurts, desperation, etc!!

We all need the saving grace of Jesus! Titus 2:11, “For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people.”

      ***

I’ve got to admit, sometimes I feel as though my heart really breaks and hurts when I see people struggling and hurting without Jesus in their life. I used to take on their problems/situations and do everything I could to try to help them. It was definitely a stressful and unhealthy way to live–I just wanted so desperately for them to have Jesus in their lives! Can you relate?!

I am so thankful that Jesus knows my heart and He spoke to me through the following devotional:

      Oswald Chambers, June 10th

“Remember that you can never give another person what you have found, but you can cause him to have a desire for it.”

Those words really spoke to my heart: Only God can change them. I can’t do what only God can do. Duh, right? 🙂 My heart so desperately wanted them to change, I was getting the lines crossed on what I could do and what only God could do.

This is what I can do: I live my life with the light and love of Jesus shining brightly, sharing the gospel of Jesus wherever I go. Praying, loving, accepting someone right where they are, giving, inviting…everyone I know to the saving grace of Jesus!

      ***

I recently discovered a poem my mom had written. The paper is worn and yellow. My mother’s very distinct handwriting graces the page. The theme of her poem exactly emulates what Oswald Chambers highlighted in the quote above: others may not understand her faith or love for Jesus, but just as God drew her to Jesus, she knows others can receive the same opportunity.  “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws Him” John 6:44.

You do not know Him as I do,

it must be very strange to you.

That I can love what I can’t see,

and you can’t feel His love for me.

      *

      I won’t pretend I’m special though–

I’m not the only one, you know.

      To share a hopeful destiny,

though you can’t feel His love for me.

      *

It may be anger that draws you near,

      it could be sorrow–even fear.

I hope you’re drawn, though I can see,

that you can’t feel His love for me.

      *

Once, it was me who sat with closed eyes,

and opened my heart to the enemy’s lies.

But, what was His power when Jesus was through?

You can’t feel it for me, but I know it for you.

       by Sue Corbin

On this day, and every other day, I am going to commit to living my life for Jesus in such a way that others desire to hear the Good News of Jesus!

      All the glory to God,

    • Pick Up Your Cross

Posted at 12:02 AM by Shanon Crenshaw, on December 10, 2018

Three wisemans and the star of Bethlehem

Good morning, friends!! Today was a great day in the house of the Lord, and I pray you are having an amazing Sunday. 🙂

Today in church, Pastor Mike was continuing a sermon he began last week titled, “Follow the Star.”  The three Kings, or Magi, were following the star because they knew it would lead them to Jesus Christ their Messiah.

They were traveling on a journey of thousands of miles bringing gifts, worship, and joy to baby Jesus.

Think about it, this journey was long, at least over a year, and the star continued to shine brightly and guided them to their Messiah!

This star lead them to the Savior, in the same manner that the cross you bear daily will lead you to the Savior.

I know that I combined a lot into that sentence, but when Pastor Mike said it this morning, it combined two things that God has placed on my heart this morning:  Jesus’ birth and the cross we bear.

      ***

Over the last week and a half, the Lord has been placing one scripture heavily on my heart and mind. In fact, several of my daily devotionals have spoken to me about it. The scripture is Luke 9:23 (NIV)

      pick up your cross

Ok, God. Wow, this is a tough one. What does denying self mean, and how do I carry my cross daily?? The February 18th Experiencing God day-by-day devotional says this:

Your “cross” is God’s will for you, regardless of the cost. Taking up your cross is a choice; it is not beyond your control. You may have health problems, a rebellious child, or financial pressures, but do not mistake these as your “cross to bear.” Neither the circumstances you face nor the consequences of your own actions are your cross.

Your cross will be to voluntarily participate in Christ’s sufferings as He carries out His redemptive purposes (Phil. 3:10). Paul said he rejoiced in his sufferings because he knew that by them he was able to participate in the suffering required to bring others into Christian maturity (Col. 1:24).

We tend to want to go immediately from “denying ourselves” to “following Jesus.” But you can never follow Jesus unless you have first taken up your cross. There are aspects of God’s redemptive work that can be accomplished only through suffering.

Just as Christ had to suffer in order to bring salvation, there will be hardships you may have to endure in order for God to bring salvation to those around you. Jesus did not talk with His disciples about the cross until they had come to know He was the Christ (Matt. 16:21).

You will never be able to endure the suffering of the cross unless you have first been convinced that Jesus is the Christ. Once you have settled your relationship with Christ, He will introduce you to your cross. There is no Christianity without a cross.

If you are waiting for a relationship with God that never requires suffering or inconvenience, then you cannot use Christ as your model. God’s will for you involves a cross. First, take up your cross; then you can follow Him.

      ***

Commitment to Christ means taking up your cross daily, giving up your hopes, dreams, possessions, and even your very life if need be for the cause of Christ. Only if you willingly take up your cross may you be called His disciple (Luke 14:27). The reward is worth the price. (Gotquestionsministries.org).

If you wonder if you are ready to take up your cross, consider these questions:
      • Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means losing some of your closest friends?
      • Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means alienation from your family?
      • Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means the loss of your reputation?
      • Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means losing your job?
      • Are you willing to follow Jesus if it means losing your life?

God’s will in my life will not look the same as yours, and if I am committed to following Him daily, it will always change according to His will. Right now, the Lord has me writing for Him, being a stay-at-home mom to my daughters and making a home for my family, volunteering my time helping in the church office, participating in bible studies, and seeking His will daily in developing my writing. I don’t know what my future holds, but God does, and I love the people He places in my life to love and minister to.

God’s will may also be: becoming a missionary in a faraway land, accepting a job with half the pay to lead others to Christ, becoming a youth pastor and mentoring tomorrow’s generation, becoming a stay-at-home mom or dad and ministering to your children and their friends, working in the medical field and showing the love of Jesus to others in their weakest moments. The list goes on and on.

God will use your strengths, weaknesses, hurts, pain, brokenness, and every other part He has created in you when you completely surrender to Him. Apostle Paul said it best when he explained that his message came from Christ and that he was chosen before he was even born in Galatians 1: 11-16:

11 I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. 14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles…”

God did not waste any part of Paul–his background, his training, his citizenship, his deny-yourselfcarry-a-crossno-its-not-easyit-wasnt-easy-forjesus-eithermind, or even his weaknesses. Are you willing to let God do the same for you?

You will never know all He can do with you until you allow Him to have all that you are: complete surrender!

Remember, the cross you bear daily can lead you to Jesus, in fact, He wants you to cast all of your cares on Him, and He will sustain you. (Psalm 55:22).

      All the Glory to God!!

    • Torn Pages of Time

Posted at 11:26 PM by Shanon Crenshaw, on November 23, 2018
      Leavenworth

      My daughters and I

For Christmas last year, my daughters gave me one of those page-a-day calendars. Each day has a beautiful picture and bible scripture on it. As I tore off yesterday’s scripture, I realized how few I have left for this year.

That simple swipe of a page caused me to reflect for a moment on all of the many triumphs, disappointments, hardships, and blessings that occurred this year.

Appropriately in line with my thoughts was today’s scripture, right out of Ecclesiastes 7:13-14. King Solomon wrote:

      “Consider what God has done:

Who can straighten what he has made crooked?

When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad consider:

God has made one as well as the other.

Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future.”

Remember that God is with you through all times; He will never leave you nor forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6) I truly believe that He holds me by my right hand.

When I have experienced my deepest and darkest times, I close my eyes and actually visualize Him seated right next to me, holding my hand. It brings me the most complete, nurturing love and comfort that only my Heavenly Father can provide. Try it, you will be blessed. 🙂

“By recognizing that God is working in us through all situations, we can rejoice in success and prosperity and learn to trust God through failure and adversity” (Ecclesiastes 7: 8-14 commentary.)

God holds my all days, as well as yours. Remember, God doesn’t change; only our situations do.

      jesus christ the same yesterday

During these times of thankfulness, take some time to thank God for His never-ending presence in your life. Times change, people change, relationships change but He is the one that we can always count on–His promises never change!

      Praise God!!

      All the glory to God,

      a new day

Hello, my friends! If you have been following my blog for the last two weeks, you know I have been battling migraines. In particular, the last ten days pretty much confined me to bed because of intense vertigo. I couldn’t drive, read or write much at all, and did the absolute bare essentials of my daily necessities.

All I could do was lay in bed, pray/spend time with the Lord, and watch TV. And if you know me well, you know I don’t sit for long or watch much TV. I prefer to stay active and keep busy. This was hard for me, and not just because of the physical symptoms and limitations. Spiritually, God was about to reveal an area of pride in my life. Yeah, I know. Sneaky pride. Blah!

      new creation in christ

God was at work in me, sanctifying me, I realized this after everything was stripped away: my family responsibilities, my bible reading/studies, my church small group facilitator responsibilities, and even most day-to-day routines like driving my daughter to school, were gone.

You know the most devastating realization I had when all of those “jobs” were taken away: my self-worth and identity went right along with it!! I felt like a failure, and not worth much of anything. In honesty, my deepest level of pain was the realization that my identity was in me and not in Christ.

“Sin is the despairing refusal to find your deepest identity in your relationship and service to God, writes theologian Tim Keller. “Sin is seeking to become oneself, to get an identity, apart from Him. What does this mean? Everyone gets their identity, their sense of being distinct and valuable, from somewhere or something…Human beings were made not only to believe in God…but to love Him supremely, center their lives on Him above anything else, and build their very identities on Him. Anything other than this is sin” (Voskamp, The Broken Way, emphasis mine).

God used this week and a half illness to strip me of everything, to get to the root of my sin, to break into my selfish desires, and to equip me with His love and the power of the Holy Spirit to become a new creation in Him.

“Love is the willingness to be interrupted. Love is the willingness to be broken into. There are never interruptions in a day–only manifestations of Christ. Your theology is best expressed in your availability and your interruptability–and ability to be broken into. This is the broken way. This is all love. And I hadn’t known–I will only love as well as I let myself be broken into” Ann Voskamp, The Broken Way.

God knows everything about you and me. He has searched us and is familiar with all of our ways. (Psalm 139: 1-4 ) He knows of your worries about paying the bills. He knows the struggles you have with your drug-addicted child. He knew I would be sick for several weeks, and lying in bed for most of it. You know what, though?! God wastes nothing! He is at work, He is always with you, and He has a plan, “to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

He used those moments when I was lying in bed, full of tears and in desperate need of Him, to break into me and reveal to me that my true identity is in Christ. Only Him, nothing in this world.

No person, job, responsibility, or material thing. Somewhere along the way, I got out of balance, and my worth became mostly based on what I did, if I couldn’t earn my way, I wasn’t worth much to anyone. The father of lies and the enemy of my heart, ran rampant with this insecurity of mine, as I’m sure you can imagine. We all have sin, doubts, and insecurities. Praise God that He uses everything, including His intense love for us to change us daily, from the inside out.

Remember this, my friends, no matter what you are going through right now, He knows.

      You are loved.

      You are His.

      He is always at work.

      He keeps His promises.

God healed me, my friends. Prayers were answered! Through the evaluation of a different doctor, I was diagnosed with migraine-induced vertigo and an ear infection. I was given two different prescriptions for my ailments, and I am almost back to normal physically! I can drive!! Thank you, Jesus!!

However, praise be to God that my heart and identity were changed forever because of Him.

      ALL the glory to God,

      Shanon

Good morning friends! It is a beautiful, clear, sunny fall day here in the Pacific Northwest and, I say, “Thank you, Jesus!” I know, all too soon, the days will be shorter, and darker, and much-needed rain will be nourishing the thousands of Evergreens blanketing this state. Also, snow will thicken and cover the Cascade Mountains and gorgeous Mount Rainier! Breathtaking images that remind me of our creator. 🙂

Today I was focusing my thoughts on a message I had received last Tuesday, from a close friend and mentor, Vicki-Lynn. During our messages, she said, “God doesn’t waste our pain.” I needed that reminder, especially this week. There is not any “major” thing going on, but many, many hiccups. Do you ever have those days where one thing after another goes wrong?! And then the next day is kind of similar? So when the third day comes around, it takes a ton of momentum and a whole lot of Jesus to throw the covers off of you, roll out of bed, and say “Good Morning, I am ready for today!!”

At the beginning of this week, I would not have been able to greet you with the same enthusiasm and smiles had I not reflected on my friend’s perfectly timed message and God’s word. Diving into God’s Word helped me to greet this morning in a fresh, Holy Spirit anointed way. Check it out:

      2 corinthians 1 3-4.png

Isn’t that reassuring? God does not waste any tears, hardships, or lessons, and it doesn’t matter how big or small the difficulties are to us. He sees and knows them all! Pastor Jim Duggan reflects on a revelation God gave him during a very difficult time:

“God reminded me that not only is He an all-knowing God, but a purposeful God. He even finds a purpose for our pain. God comforted me that day with the knowledge that He would use my experience to prepare me to help others who may one day experience the same thing. My hurt was real, and it ran real deep. But God’s grace dives deeper than any depth to which our heart can plunge.”

It seems as though every day we are bombarded with conflicts among countries, divided political parties, violence in schools, problems at work, families in crisis mode, etc., which leads to high levels of stress and, in turn, pain.

      BUT GOD…

God sees and knows you, my friend! He wants to take every burden and hurt you carry and give you the love and peace that only He can give you. He has an incredible plan for You and He will use your experiences for His glory to help others!! Isn’t that incredible?!

But, how, right?! Here are some steps I have used to move from hurt to help to hope:

      1. Have a relationship with Jesus and talk to Him daily. If the Lord Jesus is not your personal Savior, and you are ready to trust Jesus with your life, pray: Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died for my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I now invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as Lord and Savior. Thanks for making me a child of God. I now surrender my life to You and Your purposes. Give me, by Your Holy Spirit, the boldness to confess my faith in You to others. I ask this in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

      2. Ask God to help you to move from hurting to helping. Pastor Jim Duggan explains it this way, “Rather than asking God to deliver you from your hurt, ask Him to use your hurt to help others.” God has promised to comfort us, be with us, and strengthen us. Trust God and ask Him to empower you. He will and this is where you shift from hurting to helping.

      3. Once you have placed your trust in God and released your hurt to Him, He can use your pain to help others and this offers hope to you and all the people God places in your life. “The things we learn about life, God, and ourselves in the difficult moments are the greatest lessons. Only a God as great as Jehovah can cause His glory to shine through our pain” (Duggan, Jim). Amen! Praise God!

From hurt to help to hope

Have faith. Be courageous. God can use you and He will prepare you for it. Rest in His presence, seek the Holy Spirit, and talk to Him daily. He loves you, my friend!

My question to you now is this:

How is God going to use your hurt to help others?

We are all surrounded by hurting people. You are valued and people need to hear your story! We all have experienced some type of pain whether it is: sickness, addiction, financial problems, job loss, death of a loved one, etc. God can use everything.

Ask God and take courage in Him–today is the day You can bless others!!

      All the glory to God,

      Shanon

    • Dying to Self

Posted at 7:49 PM by Shanon Crenshaw, on September 22, 2018

      rooted in Jesus

Hi! I realized this week that September is flying by, we are heading into the fourth week already! How crazy is that?! While looking at the calendar I came to another realization. It’s September and I am at the six-month mark since I began this journey of blogging. March 16, 2018, was my official debut. 🙂

God planted the “seed” of writing into my life several years ago. Slowly he was watering His will in my life through His word, my journaling, writing classes, and the people and circumstances He brought into my life. What I have realized over the last six months is that His greatest work was just beginning in me.

Dying to self. I never realized how much I cared about what people thought about me until now. I need validation to justify who I am in this world, to feel needed. The world tells me:

      1) I need to be paid to have a “real” contribution to my family.

      2) My worth, in blogging, is equated to likes, views, and numbers of followers.

      3) My writing career is considered to be successful by the number of books sold or the amount of money made.

      Lies, lies, lies!

They are lies because my eyes are set on Jesus and His characteristics. Slowly and daily, I am being made into the image of God. For that to happen, these insecurities and doubts had to come to the surface. It’s painful, but I am being rooted in Christ.

All of the work He is doing is “under the surface” in my heart, mind, and soul. It’s deep. God gave me the realization that I need not look to the world for my success and validation, only Him. For that reason:

      1) I will work only for Him and the provisions and blessings He has for me. I will not worry of the successes of the world. He knows what I need. My treasures are in heaven, not on earth.

      2) I will never list the number of followers on my blog. This is my own personal decision between God and me. Besides, He is the only one that matters and He already knows, right?!

      3) My writing career is His. Where he leads me, what I write, and who reads it is all: His will, His time, and all guided by the Holy Spirit.

      colossians 2 6 to 7

I want to be deeply rooted in Him so that none of my self remains. So this week, I want to share my first blog with you: the day my roots began growing deeper in Christ. Thank you, so much, Heavenly Father for reminding me that You are the ONLY One I need.

      Blessings,

      Shanon

Today I start on a journey of obedience. Trust me, if the step I was about to take was only about me, I would stay safely on the shore. My feet solidly planted in the sand, several feet away from the unknown waters I am CALLED to jump in.
However, my heart belongs to Jesus. No, Jesus IS my heart and that is why this journey is no longer about me. It is about faith and an unmistakable vision He planted in me years ago.

      ***

“Greeting cards?! Are you serious, God?” My thoughts, while my husband and I drove towards the freeway, were all over the place. How could God have placed writing on my heart when I have never kept a journal OR ever aspired to write, well, anything that I wasn’t told I had to write? Like in school or college. Not ONLY did God place it in my heart to write, but He told me what to call it–Heaven Sent Sentiments. Wow. The seed for Heaven Sent Sentiments was planted that day in 2010, and God has been ever gently watering the vision He gave me into existence.

My “watering” began with a deep thirst to be in His word, prayer, and presence, unlike anything I had ever known. If I am being completely transparent with you, I believe this was my first test of obedience. Some days were harder than others initially, but the closeness I began to have with my Heavenly Father was far greater than the time I was giving “up” to experience my life with Him. My proximity to Jesus resulted in a deeper awareness of Him around me and the promptings on where He was leading me next.

There was no denying my next step…higher education to get a Bachelor’s degree in English and Creative Writing! Yup, I was back in college around the same time my oldest daughter would be applying for college herself. God sometimes has an amazing sense of humor in His timing, but it is always on time. Several “God moments” and levels of obedience occurred during this stage and I will definitely highlight those moments on a future blog. Let’s just say I was brought down on my knees when I thought I could not go any further…on my own. Can you relate? This is where the power of the Holy Spirit steps in….when we allow him to.

Obedience to the call God gave me now focused on writing, writing, and more….reading. Sorry. Had to throw that in to make sure you were paying attention. So… journaling, screenwriting, non-fiction stories, and memoirs became the focus of my days….greeting cards did not. Remember, that is what God initially laid on my heart to write. I believe he will lead me there when He is ready. Right now, He gave me a very clear indication of what He wants me to do: write a blog.

Friends, this is where you and I come together in an amazing way: to share this journey that God placed in my heart. This blog is a place to share the hope of Jesus through my experiences, your experiences, and the daily way God speaks in us, through us, and around us. Is there a moment like mine when you stepped out in complete obedience or faith? I would love to hear your thoughts, encouragements, and stories!

Thank you, Jesus, for the opportunity to step out in faith and pure obedience, knowing that you are with me every step of the way. Whether five people read this or five hundred–this is for You! Let your words be my words and may those words be set on fire by the Holy Spirit. Amen!!

      ALL the glory to God,
      Shanon

    • Me?! Talk to God?

Posted at 12:04 AM by Shanon Crenshaw, on September 16, 2018

      Pray faith God

Hello! What a week it has been, so busy! It is already the middle of September, can you believe it? Although, with the explosion of pumpkin-spice items everywhere, you would think it was the middle of October, am I right?! 🙂

Well, my writing took a different turn this week. Thank you, Jesus! I was about halfway done with this week’s blog and guess what? God led me on a different path. Prayer. I am really not surprised though, God began stirring my heart on the subject of prayer last week during church.

Sumner Family Church, where I attend, has a heart and a focus on community and what leads to community? Relationships, and what develops relationships? Conversations!! I know that was a lot of questions and answers, but stick with me, we get to the heart of it in a minute. What is the fundamental part of conversations?

Spending time together, getting to know one another, and talking.

Conversations are the essential building blocks for all relationships. This includes friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, and God. Yes, God. We talk to God through prayer.

“Prayer is keeping company with God.” Clement of Alexandria

Last Sunday, my church began, “Prayer Journey” which is “designed to establish a thriving prayer life in the families of SFC.” I love this! Through the next six weeks, we will have a weekly prayer focus, bi-weekly blogs, text/e-mail reminders, and Friday night community groups in which we are coming together as a church to pray! Amen!

conversations with God     In its simplicity, and what I tell my kids, is that praying is talking to God. I remember when I was quite young, I wasn’t sure what to say to God, so I remember my prayers had more of a King James slant with many thou’s and thy’s. There is nothing wrong with praying that way, it just wasn’t natural to me. I discovered the best way for me to pray and converse with God is to be me.

I pray privately in my prayer closet while driving in my car, on the phone when I need to, and anytime the Holy Spirit moves me to. I pray through words, silent reverence, song, and my prayer language. I pray daily to make conversing with God a routine. “You will never be able to pray everywhere, all the time, until you have learned to pray somewhere, some of the time” (Water, Mark).

I was encouraged further this week by the first e-mail I received in regard to the Prayer Journal. It reminded me that each one of us is going through different seasons of our life and, because of that, my prayer life will not look like yours! Whew! Here is an excerpt from the e-mail:

“Pastor Mike talked about embracing differences on Sunday. This got me thinking about all of us embracing our own differences. In a world of comparison, how have our differences affected my view of my family and myself? Prayer in my life and in my family’s is going to look different from my neighbors. Mealtime can be too chaotic, so we pray at bedtime with the kids. Praying together as a couple everyday becomes a “checklist” item, so instead we set aside one night a week to pray and dig in deeper together with God. Have I embraced that, or have I created some ideal situation in my head that must be met in order for prayer time to be “successful”? My 19-month-old has no concept of not screaming his head off during prayer time some nights

The differences of what prayer looks like in your family, or for you personally, make it no less valuable for you than to anyone else. The point is you’re choosing God. You’re choosing to spend time with Him. That should be the focus. If you’ve never had a “big” prayer life, maybe baby steps are needed. Perhaps you’ve had a wonderful prayer life and want to spend this season digging in deeper with God. Everyone’s prayer life is going to look a little different – and that’s okay. Give yourself permission to look different. We’re all growing in this together! (Sumner Family Church, emphasis mine).

Isn’t that Beautiful? I love the way that was put together and I had to share it with my fellow believers and friends.

There should be no “prayer comparison” between the Jones’, the Crenshaw’s, and the Cagle’s. Praise God! But, there should be an active conversation between you and God. Every day.

What/where is your favorite way to speak to God? While out on a walk admiring the beauty of His creation? Singing songs in the pews of church on a Glorious Sunday morning? While driving on your way to work? If you would like to share, please do. 🙂

      ALL the glory to God,

      Shanon
