Posted at 3:41 PM by Shanon Crenshaw, on January 2, 2020

      psalm 37 23 to 24 number two

Over the last few years, my new year has begun the same way: God gives me a new scripture to focus on and on the first of January, I answer the same set of questions in my journal. I look forward to these questions in the same way that I greet a dear friend; ready to ponder not only the newness of a fresh start but the bold anticipation of what my dear friend and Savior Jesus, have in store for me this year.

Here is an example of the questions and the first one I answer:

What is my one prayer for this year that seems impossible, knowing that “nothing is impossible with God”?

Last year, on January 1st, 2019, I stepped out boldly in my prayer to God, and you know what?!  He answered my prayer in His timing, towards the end of the year, AND it is continuing to unfold!! I am so excited to see all that He has in store through this answered prayer as I continue to rest and wait on Him.   Praise God!!

I honestly believe that stepping out boldly and completely giving this “impossible” prayer to Him, allowed me to surrender ALL to His will and allowed me to rest and wait.

The more I do this, as hard as it is for my flesh, the more joy and peace I have in the midst of each difficulty. The Bible says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13. Amen!

Maybe one day I will share the prayer that I spoke about above, but for now, I’m going to change gears and share the details of the scripture the LORD chose for me to focus on for 2020 and a little bit about why it is so profound to me.

      ***

On December 31, 2019, I was reading my bible and spending time in my writing room with God, focusing on His Word. I was reading a chapter in the book of Psalms when this scripture jumped out at me:

If the LORD delights in a man’s way,

      He makes his steps firm;

though he stumble, he will not fall,

for the LORD upholds him with His hand. (Psalm 37:23-24)

I KNEW, without a doubt, that THIS was my scripture for 2020. I immediately wrote it down on a card and put it in the same spot on my desk where last year’s scripture was placed. I will meditate on it all year.

Next, I asked the Holy Spirit to share with me the significance of God’s Word and to share what He would have me learn from it.

Immediately, my mind went back to the difficulties and bedrest the Lord had me on– off and on–over the last several weeks of this year. These “stumbles and bumps in the road” caused by migraines and sinus infections, caused me to miss out on opportunities in writing and church activities because of severe vertigo, blurred vision, and headaches that only medication and bedrest could relieve.

BUT through it ALL, I knew God was holding me by my right hand AND I trust Him through all of it!!

Was it easy?! NO! My flesh kept reminding me what I was missing out on and how I was missing deadlines in writing and not keeping up with what I set out to do etc….

But, I was sleeping and resting in God and that is where He wanted me to be or I wouldn’t have been there, right?!

So, during my convalescence, I prayed, worshipped, and rested joyfully in the LORD knowing that He is still at work and everything I go through He can use for His Glory!!!

This brings me to the next revelation that the Holy Spirit revealed to me in regard to Psalm 37: 23-24.

Last March, at our annual ladies’ retreat, God revealed, through a prayer I received over me from our Pastor’s wife, that “If I get weary or out of step, get back in line.”

During the weeks I was dealing with these migraines and sinus infections, I was especially weary about my writing. I felt like I had to keep on my writing schedule or I would be failing at what I believe is the call God has placed in my life. I don’t want to let HIM down, but how can you write when you can’t read?! My eyes were so bad!

So I turned back to this journal entry and the prayer dated March 23rd, 2019. These were the words that Kim Price, our Pastor’s wife, spoke to me:

I have a call on my life. Be obedient. Keep my eyes on God. Trust Him. If I get weary or get out of step, get right back in line.

These words were so strong in my heart and in prayer for me, that I immediately wrote them down when I returned to my seat. There was more to the prayer, but the other details are resting between me and God.

During the last few days, when the Holy Spirit revealed this scripture to me and some of the details behind it, it gave me a completely different perspective of what I had been going through with my illness.

It reminded me that: I need to keep obedient to God and let Him direct my steps. I need not worry about anyone else’s standards of failure if I am being true to what He is calling me to do each day.

I need to begin my day with Him and ask Him, what to focus on. He will never steer me wrong when I place Him first!

In conclusion, I know we live in a Fallen world. Bumps in the road will happen and I may stumble. But, I will continue to hold THE steady hand of the One Who holds my calling, my days, and my life–the LORD my God. Amen!

      All the Glory to God,

      Shanon

    • A Purpose to Pain

Posted at 11:43 AM by Shanon Crenshaw, on November 12, 2019

      john 6 44

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” John 6:44

Several days ago, I was remembering a conversation I had with a friend of mine. She was asking me how I could believe and trust in God with all of the hardships that I had experienced over the years.

She went on to explain to me how she had a similar background to mine and couldn’t seem to let go of the pain and grief she was feeling.

Ohhh, how I could relate and my heart went out to her. I know the suffering that loss can bring and the bondage it can carry.

Immediately I knew God was at work in her heart. In the bible, it says, “But keep the Lord Christ holy in your hearts. Always be ready to answer everyone who asks you to explain about the hope you have” 1 Peter 3:15.

Jesus, upon surrendering my life and heart to Him, turned the bondage of anger, depression, and sadness I was carrying into the love, hope, and joy that ONLY He can do!! I’ve got to share His Good News with everyone!

Upon this realization, that God was at work in her heart, I immediately prayed to the Lord for His wisdom and guidance and listened in two ways: first, to what my friend was sharing. I didn’t listen with the intent to only reply, I truly heard what she was saying. Second, I listened for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and trusted that He would give me the words to share at just the right moment.

There is NO coincidence to these moments–they are God-ordained. I believe God can use each one of us to answer a prayer that has been lifted up by someone in that person’s life.

It could be an aunt, uncle, grandparent, mom–or even that very person that you are talking to–who is seeking Jesus and the relationship that leads to God and eternal life.

This is where God uses all of our sufferings, pain, and heartache for His Glory. He is the only one that can do that. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28 NIV.

In that moment, God used a deep pain that I had experienced when I was younger to connect with a young woman who was seeking healing and love from the Lord Who could heal her in the same way He healed me. I cherish these moments when hearts bond and healing begins in the Name of Our Lord Jesus. It was all God and all for His Glory!

But you know what else happens each time God uses me in this way? His Power helps heal the pain I experienced even further, and it is replaced with a purpose that can only come from Him! A purpose to the pain and suffering we experience in this world through our Lord Jesus! Amen!!

Henry & Richard Blackaby and Claude King, in Experiencing God explain it this way:

“People don’t ask questions about spiritual matters unless God is at work in their lives. When you see someone seeking God or asking questions about Christianity you are witnessing God at work. That is something only God does in people’s lives” (Blackaby, King pg. 69, emphasis mine).

God has a purpose for where you are right now and what you’ve been through. You are unique, fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and He has a plan for your life! Surrender your life to Him and allow Him to work in every aspect of your life.

I can’t wait to hear all about it!! Share the joy of Jesus in your life, with me and with others! Amen!!

      All the glory to God,

      Shanon

Posted at 11:29 AM by Shanon Crenshaw, on September 27, 2019

      pray without ceasing

Love. Death. Faith. Those three words have been the basis of many poems, songs, and hymns throughout the years. One young Irish immigrant by the name of Joseph M. Scriven had a profound and life-altering time with each one of those subjects. In fact, it was the combination of all three of those circumstances that ultimately created the poem that was turned into one of the most beloved hymns of all time.

Joseph M. Scriven was born in 1819 in County Down, Northern Ireland, to Captain John Scriven and Jane Medlicott, whose wealth afforded him the luxury of a college education. He began Trinity College in Dublin at the age of sixteen and several years later earned a Bachelor’s degree.

During his early twenties, many changes were on the horizon for Joseph. Among them, he had new prospects for a career with his degree–teaching and tutoring. Also, he had discovered and developed a relationship with God through the beliefs and teachings of Plymouth Brethren, a church and congregation that focused, “on the individual’s direct relationship with God and the emphasis this placed on personal responsibility. They met in simple meeting rooms for the Lord’s Supper and to join in prayer and preach the Gospel” (Plymouth Brethren Christian Church). Finally, he was in love and engaged to be married.

      Then severe tragedy struck.

“At age twenty-five, Joseph Scriven decided to leave his native country so he could migrate to Canada. He left due to a twofold reasoning; the religious influence of the Plymouth Brethren and the accidental drowning of his fiancée the night before the scheduled wedding.” (Glenewinkel, Darren).

During the mid-1840’s Joseph Scriven settled in the Woodstock/Clinton area in Canada and began working as a teacher and private tutor to earn a living. Also, he once again began meeting the Plymouth Brethren group that was near where he lived in town.

Over the course of several years, he was asked to privately tutor Theodore Robert Pengelley, the ten year old son of Robert Lamport Pengelley and Lydia Eliza Emily Roche. While working for this family, he lived with them for the next five years.

It was during this time that he had the pleasure to meet and get to know Mrs. Pengelley’s niece, Eliza Catherine Roche. Over time, their affection for each other grew and they became engaged in 1859.

Before their coming nuptials, Miss Roche wanted to be baptized with full water immersion. Port Hope History provides more details surrounding that time:

“It was conducted in Rice Lake in April 1860, with the ice barely gone. Eliza, who was already seriously ill with consumption, was thoroughly chilled by the experience, developed pneumonia, weakened over a four-month period and died on the 6th of August 1860. She was buried in the little cemetery beside the Pengelley chapel.”

Her death changes Joseph Scriven’s life forever. He has now suffered the loss of two fiancée’s and at the age of thirty-nine, dedicates the rest of his life to not only being a bachelor but to servanthood in the name of Jesus Christ.

He takes up residence with a widow in the town of Port Hope, Canada, providing for her the rest of her life. Also, he lives barely above the poverty level, giving everything he has to all those in need. And, every chance he can, he preaches the Gospel not only in a little church but in the streets of town.

And finally, he writes poems and hymns. He began one such poem with these words: “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief to bear!”

Once he finished this poem he titled, ‘Pray Without Ceasing,‘ he made two copies. He gave one copy to the widow, Margaret, he lived with. He sent the second copy to his mother in Dublin, Ireland, because she was in ill health and he thought those words would comfort her.

And indeed they did!! It is believed that probably through his mother the poem was made public because Mr. Scriven worked so hard to be humble and not bring any attention upon himself. All that was needed now was a musical accompaniment.

Composer Charles Crozat Converse,” wrote the music inspired by the poem,’ Pray Without Ceasing’ for what became the hymn ‘What a Friend we have in Jesus.’

During the remainder of his years, he suffered from ill health and poverty, and yet he still always put the needs of others before his own. At the age of 66, he passed from this earthly life into the waiting arms of his Friend and Savior, Jesus!! Amen!

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
      What a privilege to carry
      everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer! (Hymnary.org)

    • Testimonies of Hope: Luis Palau

Posted at 3:36 PM by Shanon Crenshaw, on September 13, 2019

      for i know the plans.png

The first time I heard the name Luis Palau, I was driving around town listening to the Christian radio station, K-Love. Several times a day they feature a segment called, One Minute of Encouragement, where Preachers/Teachers share scripture and words of encouragement to everyone. For some reason, I’ve always found Luis Palau’s to be the most uplifting to me, so I was intrigued when I came across a story in Charisma magazine featuring him–“Latin America’s ‘Billy Graham’ Reflects on His Legacy as He Struggles With Stage 4 Cancer” by Joshua Olson.

In all honesty, I knew next to nothing about this amazing man of God, before I read this article. The beginning of his ministry is one of the most inspiring and hopeful that I believe I have ever read. This is what I discovered to be the most profound, here’s the excerpt from the piece:

“He vividly recalls the first person he ever led to the Lord. Palau was 18 years old and teaching a Sunday school class in Cordoba, Argentina, for 10 young boys. The quietest boy, Marcos, lived with his grandmother and came from a broken home. Palau confesses to this day he has no idea how Marcos came to church that Sunday, since his grandmother was not a Christian. But Marcos had questions for “Senor Palau,” and the young Sunday school teacher led him to pray the sinner’s prayer and accept Jesus in his heart.

About a week later, Palau received devastating news. Marcos had been riding his bicycle in the road and horsing around with a streetcar. His bike twisted beneath him and dragged him beneath the streetcar’s wheels. Marcos was killed.

“When he first received the Lord, I was so excited,” Palau says. “And the Lord took the little fellow home so quickly. But to me, it got into my blood: Once you experience leading people to eternal life, everything else is puny foolishness by comparison. … If you experience leading someone to the Lord, you don’t need anyone to kick you in the pants and tell you, ‘Go and do it.’ It comes from your DNA. It’s part of your life” (Olson, Joshua).

I had to read those words several times. So many emotions flooded my heart and mind. This is what I took away the most after reading those life-changing paragraphs:

Reflected in this article is the truth to the fact that God can take tragic circumstances, which occur to all of us, and use them as trajectory to not only save one man’s life, but possibly generation upon generation.

Doesn’t that give you the chills?! I cried in joy and awe as I thought of that grandmother–does she know that the death of her grandson potentially helped propel–through God first and the obedience of Palau and his ministry team–an Evangelical Ministry, that since 1960, “have shared the gospel with an estimated 1 billion people in 48 countries” (Olson, Joshua).

God knew all the details of this encounter, and how, through obedience, many lives would be forever changed.

I am so glad that God knows the big picture of everything going on in my life and is willing, when I surrender to Him, to guide all of my steps and use me according to the plan He has for my life.

I am reminded that everything He brings me to, whether good or difficult, has a purpose and I may never know all the details. I do trust in God because He does know the whole story.

Continue to use me today, God, in everything that may come my way. Give me Your wisdom, guidance, love, and provision so that I can help spread the Gospel of Jesus to all of those around me.  Amen!!

    • Testimonies of Hope: Morning Glory!

Posted at 8:00 AM by Shanon Crenshaw, on September 6, 2019

      camping pic

Good morning everyone! Happy Friday!! I’m heading out camping this weekend with my family one last time before the rain and colder temperatures set in during the fall and winter months. We are going to the same campground as pictured above. I love getting outdoors and resting in the peace and serenity of God’s Creation–so restorative and beautiful.

      ***

Have you ever considered the thought that all the work God is doing through you and in you is not just for today, but for eternity?

In all honesty, these two testimonial quotes really broadened my thoughts, perspective, and hope in light of all God is allowing me to go through here in relation to my spending eternity there with Him in Heaven. Take a look:

Dr. Billy Graham writes, “I have a friend who lost his job, a fortune, his wife, and his home. But he tenaciously held to his faith–the only thing he had left. One day he stopped to watch some men doing stonework on a huge church. One of them was chiseling a triangular piece of stone.

“What are you going to do with that?” asked my friend. The workman said, “See that little opening way up there near the spire? Well, I’m shaping this down here so it will fit up there.”

Tears filled my friend’s eyes as he walked away, for it seemed that God had spoken through the workman to explain the whole ordeal through which he was passing, “I’m shaping you down here so you’ll fit in up there.”

After you have “suffered a while, make you perfect…settle you,” echo the words of the Bible (Graham, Dr. Billy 154-155).

While I was reading that testimony, it opened up my heart and mind to ALL God is doing not only in my life but to those around me as well. I’ve got to admit oftentimes I think only of what God is doing through me today, and how, through Him, I can make a difference in this world. I never gave much thought to the fact that He is shaping me down here to fit in in Heaven!! Amazing!

Consider, also, this quote that Victor Hugo said of death:

“When I go down to the grave I can say, like so many others: I have finished my work, but I cannot say I have finished my life. My day’s work will begin the next morning. My tomb is not a blind alley. It is a thoroughfare. It closes in the twilight to be open in the dawn” (Graham, Dr. Billy 104).

I find so much hope in these testimonies. They assure me that, because I have salvation through Jesus Christ, all that I am going through has a purpose, even though I may not know it here on earth.

      romans 8 18

Joy is coming and nothing is wasted!! Can you imagine it?! What will YOUR first morning be like with Jesus?

Running and skipping around pain-free? Hugging loved ones you haven’t met yet or seen in a very long time? Finally, shaking loose from the bondage of addiction? Eating foods/meals that disease has prevented you from having? Yes, I imagine good food/meals in Heaven, after all, Jesus ate a piece of fish with some of His disciples after His resurrection (Luke 24: 40-43), right?? 🙂

Oh, the Glory to be revealed that day!! Until then, keep using me, Father, for Your Glory!!

      All the Glory to God,

    • Comfort the Broken Hearted

Posted at 11:44 AM by Shanon Crenshaw, on September 2, 2019

      Young Shanon

This picture was taken of me around Christmas time, during the late 1970’s.

Every year, about a week or so after Christmas, all of my dad’s brothers, his sister, and their families would head to my grandparents’ farm in Indiana for the annual, “Corbin Christmas.” We would exchange gifts, enjoy meals together, and run around the property playing in the snow, chasing each other, laughing, and making memories.

      ***

My mother told me years ago that this was one of her favorite pictures of me. She said that she could see the young girl I was, and glimpses of the woman I would become. It didn’t make sense to me then, but it does now.

As I look at the picture today, I see the little girl, with her head down, because she didn’t like much attention centered on her. She was more comfortable with being in the background, content to watch others and be by herself. And she enjoyed it.

To many, she was called extremely shy, and she was, but she was also a deep thinker, very sensitive to the feelings of others, and preferred to not have the focus on her.

When she made friends in school, she preferred one best friend over many and still remembers their names to this day– even though she moved away from them over thirty-five years ago.

She was different and often “teased” for being too short, too quiet, for not fitting in, or for the fact that she was a slow reader and needed extra help from the teacher.

But God knew what He was doing when He, “created my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13).

He knew her sensitivity to others could grow into a compassion for people.

He knew He could draw her out from the sidelines, and help her befriend others possibly standing alone and maybe shy like herself.

He knew the extra help reading, with her teacher and her mom, would give her the confidence to persevere in school and many of the tasks He brings to her. Oh and by the way, she reads anything she gets her hands on now. 🙂

He knew all the heartaches, difficulties, and challenges she faced could be opportunities for Him to use her for His Glory through His Comfort, Guidance, and Grace.

      ***

It all began when I was around the age in the picture and I gave my heart and my life to Jesus. He is the reason I am who I am today.

You know, I never used to like the young girl in this picture for all the reasons stated above. I was too different. But I love her now.

Once God got a hold of me, He took all of my insecurities, doubts, and “obstacles” and over time turned them into something amazing and useable for His Glory!

Go ahead, see the difference in me now, and let me tell you about the Source–Jesus–and the difference He can make in your life and the lives of others!!
